Large numbers of Mexican workers came to Silvis and were employed by manufacturing shops to strengthen an American workforce diminished by World War I. These large immagrant families could not find homes, so they moved into box cars north of the railraod tracks in Silvis. |

These Mexican-Americans were forced to move their make-shift homes to second street so they could pay property taxes and utilities the same as other residents. |

By decree of then Silvis Mayor Joe Terronez, second street was renamed "Hero Street". |
